Like the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side is primarily a residential and shopping area.
It is the home of numerous classic apartment buildings, including the famous Dakota, where John Lennon resided.
It also contains Lincoln Center (The Julliard School is there) and the Rose Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History.
Morningside Heights, the northernmost section of the Upper West Side, is home to Columbia University, Barnard College, the Union Theological Seminary and the Manhattan School of Music
